The body begins burning fat at approximately 65% of the maximum pulse rate. While exercising, the pulse rate should generally be at 60 - 70% in the first few weeks. As a rule of thumb, the following formula is commonly used:

Minimum pulse rate: Max PR x 0.7 = minimum pulse rate per min

Highest pulse rate for exercising: Max PR x 0.85 = highest pulse rate per min.
